What is Love Sick?

Love Sick is a comic strip that has been submitted into the Amazon/Andrews McMeel Publishing Comic Strip Superstar online contest.

On Monday, September 28, 2009 the creator of the strip received notification that Love Sick had advanced into the quarterfinals. It was selected from among a possible 5,000 entries as one of the top 250.

With any luck, the comic will advance into the top 50.

Wow, this is so cool. I never thought it would make it this far. Now I just want to make it into the top 10. If that happens, I’ll receive a written critique form the panel of judges and that would almost like winning! Keep you fingers crossed, pray, what ever it is you do best. Send good vibes and congrats to the additional 49 semifinalists. Here is hoping to be in the top 10!

Well, the rules of the Amazon Comic Strip Superstar contest state that I cannot publish the strips until I’m kicked out of the contest – so you’ll just have to wait. I Lost, but Now I’m Found

The top 10 finalists in the Comic Strip Superstar Contest were announced today and unfortunately Love Sick was not one of them. But all ends well! Love Sick being my first comic strip effort faired quite well in the contest in my opinion – better than I would have expected. And to have made it to the semi-finalist stage with some great artists and their strips is an honor. Overall, the effort has inspired me reconsider the value of Love Sick and I hope that you will come along for the journey. More on this later. For now, best of luck to the finalists.

A four-stroke Stella one step closer?

A 4 Stroke Stella Scooter on the Horizion?

For a few years now, rumors have run rampant that one day the two-stroke Stella would be converted into a four-stroke. The assumed reason for the conversion was that Genuine Scooter, the distributor of Stella, wanted a share of the coveted California market. With California’s strict emissions law, the sale of two-stroke Stellas in California was impossible. But a change now seems closer than ever.

Recently, LML Italia presented the new Star 4 Tempi scooter powered by a four-stroke engine with a manual transmission. The LML 4 Star is available in two engines sizes, 125 and 150 cc. As for color, there is the The Linea Classic in white, silver and gun metal; the chic Linea Prestige in red, graphite and ocean blue, and the Linea Vintage in ivory, green, orange and taxi yellow. Additionally, in 2010 there will also be a Star Lifestyle line that allows custom finishes, while a long series of original accessories is already available.

Is the US the next market to see a four-stroke Stella? I’m not sure. What I am sure about, is that I love my two-stroke smoke. I’m stickin’ with it.

Finally, after a year of submitting Haiku poetry to a couple of Journals I am going to be published! Modern Haiku has agreed that one of my haiku is worthy of a bit of ink. My little poem will appear in issue 41.1 (winter-spring 2010). Pretty exciting for me as it took so long to finally happen. According to my friend, poet Hosho McCreesh who encouraged me to send work out for consideration, it is pretty standard for a beginning poet to go a long time before publication so I feel pretty good about this. Today, one little haiku. Tomorrow…

iPhone Apps for Comics Artists

Earlier today, webcomics.com posted a list of useful apps for comic creators. The list included something for just about everyone. But what it lacked was something useful for the anvil on the head scenario. Sketching that idea that comes out of nowhere is vitally important to the comic artist. While on the bus, in a crowded bar or standing in line at the supermarket it is important to get that idea down before it escapes you.

And so comes in a handy little app called StoryPages that allows for more than just note taking. It allows you not only to draw your idea out, but to script it too.

Just released, the app by SpinThought® is an iPhone app for those that need to create illustrated story pages on the go. StoryPages lets you draw in the top portion of a page and then add text descriptions below your drawing, like a storyboard. You can add a background image from the Photo Gallery or take a picture to use as a semi-transparent background to set the scene if you’d like.

I’ve used it a few times and it is one of those things that if you don’t have, you are constantly thinking “if only…” Or, you can just lose your idea – it is up to you.

Google Chrome now available for Mac – mostly.

It is finally here. Google Chrome for Mac is now available in beta. It’s still missing a few features that are in the Windows version (like support for extensions), but the browser is seems quite fast to me so far. Faster than Safari or Firefox.

And absolutely make sure you read the Google Chrome Comic by Scott McCloud – just so you know how it works of course.

Google also released Chrome for Linux and Extensions for Windows and Linux (in beta). More details on the Google Blog.

Guest comic at Big Sandy Gilmore

I teased you and now the veil is lifted. Head on over to Matt Stout’s Big Sandy Gilmore and check out a guest strip that I have drawn thanks to Matt’s generosity and bravery. He let me draw the strip having no idea what I would come up with and assured me all along the way that he’d post it. After I sent it to him I had a vision that he would hate it. Turns out he liked it despite my vision. Guess my ESP is not so good. It’s my early Christmas gift to you – The Genuine Stella Scooter Service Manual. Chock full of everything you need to know about your 2 stroke ride. Be it oil change, tire change, electrical, air/fuel, or dismantling and overhaul. In combination with a copy of the Haynes Vespa P/PX125, 150 & 200 Manual there won’t be much you can’t handle or at least understand when the project needs more qualified help than yourself. So get in there and get your hands dirty – I ask only that you download and save to the manual to your hard drive to save me some bandwidth next time you need a carburetor rebuild and rejet… Happy scootering!
